Mistakes for Coaches to Avoid — a Mini Series…
Costly Mistakes to Avoid… Mistake #1 - One Size Fits All model
(5-6 min read)
As some of you know I wrote a book last month and got it published on Amazon. It is called “Bootstrapping a Coaching Business: 12 Costly Mistakes to Avoid on your way to Success”. The next several newsletters will be inspired from this book.
Story time! Are you trying to be a “Wonder Woman” and be everything to everyone, type of coach with your Business? Well, How is that going to turn out for you??? Well, let me tell you from my experience when I was a kid trying catch rabbits that got out… if you tried to catch two rabbits at the same time, you won’t catch either… because they will go in different directions.
Have you heard the Riches are in the Niches… But what does that mean?
It means that you have to go at least 3-4 levels down to get to the riches. The first level is the “Core Market or desire” level — everyone wants stuff in these areas and they are willing to pay money for them (think: Health, Wealth, and Relationships). The problem is now a days there are SO MANY people selling stuff in these three Core Areas it is so hard to stand out or be different and be seen… so you have to dig deeper or build higher…
The next level is Sub-Market (if you chose “Wealth” as your Core Market then think: Marketing, Real Estate, Sales, etc). [All within the core market of “Wealth”.]
Then the Next level is a Niche (if you chose “Marketing” as your Sub-Market think: Internet marketing, Print marketing, Amazon, E-Commerce, Sales funnels).
And if you really want to get another level, go to a Sub-niche (if you chose “Internet marketing” as your niche, then think: Internet marketing for Life Coaches, or Internet marketing for Community Sport coaches, or Internet marketing for Women Owned E-commerce stores, etc.)
This 4th level is where it gets really good and much easier for making choices with messaging or with product design or stories and examples to use in your business. This allows you to use “one story” or “one example” to make a point and it resonates with everyone in the room.
It also means that when you specialize in a particular area or smaller section of the market place you will become better in that small area and then you will be able to become an Expert in that small area or for that small niche of people. People will then want to come to YOU and refer you to others for that specialized knowledge and solutions for their problem in that area.
But I want to and can help “everyone”…
Really? There are 7-8 Billion people in the world… do you really think that you can help everyone? (Let’s just think about the language factor? Do you know all of the languages people speak? Let’s look at the different lifestyles everyone lives? There are many who have never seen a computer before and there are some that will never think of living in a high-rise building over 30 stories tall, and on the flip side, there are some that would never want to live in a grass shack either.) Are you really going to try helping everyone with everything?
How about this… Lets think of this from the other end of the equation…. How many people do you really need to help to live the lifestyle you want to live? (100, 300, 500, 1,000, 2,500?) Remember, If you have 1,000 people who pay you $1,000 that is a Million dollars…
So How do we dig deeper or build it higher and narrow it down even more?
Think more along the lines of this… if someone were to put 100 people in a room and you can teach them but, you can only use One story or One example per point… What type of people would you want in there, and what story or example would you use to teach that point? (If they are all the same type of people [Ex: They were all mom’s with teenage kids in a small city] it would be so much easier to design a message for them).
Start with this… Who would you pick to be your ideal customer or ideal client… Who would be the “Perfect” client that you would love teaching and you would love having 100 more of the same type of clients? (Start with this first type of client… You can help other groups of clients later.)
This makes things easier and more productive when you need it most…
You sure can make things easier for your business and your messaging to these ideal people, if you only have one type of ideal client that you are working with.
The Little Secret -
So with life, business, and coaching, (or with picking a niche or Sub-niche)... the Principles still applies… Everyone can fit into a niche, in fact, many people fit into many different niches… Think of yourself, you could fit into a niche with the type of food you prefer to eat, the type of car you drive, kind of activities you enjoy, the type of people you like to be around, your type of profession, the amount of money you are comfortable having, what stage of life you are in currently, etc. And the list goes on. But if you try to design a sales message around all those areas you’ll go “bonkers” and it would be too confusing for people to stick with long enough to buy from.
So pick one narrowed down area (a niche or sub-niche) to focus on with your business and make your life more simple and more profitable!
For the Big Results -
Today’s Action Step(s)
1) Do something that will help you find a Niche or Sub-niche that you have solutions for the problems that people in that niche are willing and able to pay for now. (The big secret is that you get to pick.)
Extra Credit 💯 😄 Use this niche or sub-niche and search online to see what others are doing for this niche or sub-niche. Look at what different problems you can/want to focus on for solutions that you can bring to the market place.
Once you find a niche or sub-niche you want to serve, ask people in that niche or sub-niche, what problems that they are currently facing.
In the next Newsletter, we will tell you more about other Costly Mistakes to Avoid for Coaches… (This “Mini Series” is based on my book… Bootstrapping a Coaching Business: 12 Costly Mistakes to Avoid on your way to Success.)
You can get a copy of the book on Amazon for “Free” with “Kindle Unlimited” or just $4.99 without. Search on Amazon something like “Bootstrapping coaching business 12 costly mistakes” and look for this cover.
